Master’s Degrees in Teaching
Teachers perform one of the most important jobs in the world: empowering children to expand their world views and improve their lives through education. A career in teaching requires sacrifice, patience, and a degree.
The Teaching Profession
You’ve seen teachers at work for much of your life, at least from the student’s perspective. Behind the desk though, teachers put in far more work than just teaching lessons in front of classes. They have to spend years learning their subjects, then prepare each lesson and activity, create tests and assignments, grade work, and keep their grades and lessons organized – and that’s before they even step in front of the whiteboard. Teachers are also increasingly expected to take on roles as informal counselors, advisors, and mediators among students, and as always, they have to be fair disciplinarians.
Earning a Master’s in Teaching
Some programs allow students to complete the requirements for teacher licensure in either elementary education or secondary education at the same time they are working towards their Master’s of Education degrees. However, other programs specifically offer a Master’s in Teaching (MAT) degree. Teaching degree programs typically include internships in which students are able to apply what they’ve learned in real-world environments.
