Master’s Degrees in Teaching Elementary Education

Becoming a public school elementary teacher only requires a bachelor’s degree from a teacher education program and a license. However, if you have a Bachelor’s degree in another field, a Master’s degree program that combines the Master’s requirements with teacher licensing requirements is a great way to springboard your teaching career.

The Elementary Teaching Profession

Elementary school teachers have to be jacks-of-all-trades. Instead of specializing in a certain subject area as secondary school teachers do, elementary teachers usually teach one class of children the basics of math, writing, reading, social and physical science, history and art. In addition to passing tests proving knowledge in those areas sufficient to teach them, teachers also have to learn education philosophies, child psychology, and teaching methods.

Earning a Master’s in Teaching Elementary Education

A Master’s in Teaching Elementary Education allows those who already have their Bachelor’s degrees to obtain teacher certification for K-5 grades and a Master of Arts at the same time. The programs include student teaching internships that often require a full semester of supervised work in classrooms. Further certification may be required, though specific requirements vary by state. Teacher education programs must be accredited for students to be eligible for licensure.
